Following the tremendous success of the European Athletics Coaches Association (EACA) Conference hosted by scottishathletics in Glasgow in 2008, a stunning programme for the International Festival of Athletics Coaching 2009 has recently been announced.
scottishathletics, working in full partnership with EACA, UKA and European Athletics, has confirmed a dazzling roll call of world class speakers who will be taking to the stage to address Festival delegates at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow from Friday 30 October until Sunday 1 November 2009.
Athletics icons Sergey Bubka, Wilson Kipketer and Adam Nelson will be in Glasgow for what is expected to be the largest formal gathering of athletics coaches in the world this year.
A number of world class experts will join the team including Cuban Santiago Antunez and Jamaican Fitz Coleman.
The Festival programme, which has evolved from the EACA Conference format in 2008, will follow the theme of 'A 2020 Vision' and will feature a number of world class speakers from both the UK and across the Globe.
For the first time, the event will deliver programmes for three strands of delegates: 'Beginner', 'Development' and 'Elite' coaches.
A full compliment of internationally renowned experts will be announced in the coming weeks to support a full programme for new club coaches through to elite international exponents.
Pole Vault legend Sergey Bubka will make the trip to Glasgow with his former coach Vitaliy Petrov and will deliver a keynote speech to all delegates before delivering a specific programme for elite jumps coaches. Petrov, who also coaches World and Olympic Champion Yelena Isinbayeva, will bring a wealth of experience from a fascinating career which has seen him coach performance athletes at the highest levels possible.
Three times World Champion and current 800m World Record holder Wilson Kipketer will also deliver a keynote address and will lead the elite coach programme for endurance (middle distance), whilst American Adam Nelson, two-time Olympic silver medalist in the shot, will bring his considerable experience to elite throws delegates in addition to his auditorium delivery.
Fitz Coleman, a leading practitioner in youth development, is currently the technical director and head coach of the IAAF High Performance Training Centre in Kingston, Jamaica, which is responsible for training the country's track athletes. He is also, along with Glen Mills, part of the coaching team for Usain Bolt and the Jamaican Olympic track team.
Santiago Antunez, coach of the Cuban World hurdles record-holder Dayron Robles, will complete the keynote delivery addresses and will also work with the elite sprints/hurdles coaches.
In addition, there will be a full range of discipline specific sessions for development level coaches and a tailored programme for beginner coaches or those who are in the early stages of their coaching careers.
EACA President Frank Dick OBE said: "I am delighted that EACA is continuing our excellent partnership relationship with scottishathletics and UKA. This partnership, combined with input from European Athletics and IAAF, provides the opportunity for Scotland and the United Kingdom to deliver the jewel in the crown in terms of athletics coaching events and to deliver a world class programme of activity for coaches of all levels. I look forward to the programme growing in the coming years in line with the growing international reputation this event continues to develop."
Kevin Tyler, Strategic Head of Coaching & Development at UKA added: "It is important that UKA works together with the Home Countries to attract the best of coaching knowledge and expertise for the benefit of developing our coaching workforce. We welcome the continued opportunity of working with scottishathletics and EACA and I anticipate that the Festival in 2009 will again prove to be a dynamic and informative learning environment for the international coaching community."
Ewen Cameron, the Festival Manager for scottishathletics further added: " We have a truly world class line up for Glasgow in 2009 and being able to offer a comprehensive programme for all delegates, from club through to elite coaches from around the world, will ensure that this is the one event that athletics coaches should not miss in 2009."
